Maine Coon Kitten Growth Stages

Maine Coon kittens are born tiny, blind and deaf, like any kitten, and they grow quickly. What sets them apart is how long the growing goes on. Most cats are close to full size at a year, but a Maine Coon keeps filling out until it is 3 to 5 years old, and the full coat, mane and tail can take just as long to arrive.

Below is what happens at each stage, from the first weeks with the mother to the long teenage phase. Every kitten develops at its own pace, so treat the ages as rough guides rather than deadlines.

When Do Maine Coon Kittens Open Their Eyes?

Usually at around 7 to 14 days old. The eyes open gradually, often one before the other, and every kitten's eyes are blue at first. Vision is blurry for the first few weeks. Adult eye color, green, gold or copper in most Maine Coons, starts to come through from around six weeks and usually settles over the next few months.

Hearing develops over the same weeks: the ears are folded and closed at birth, and open and stand up over roughly the first three weeks. Until then a newborn cannot see, hear well or keep itself warm, so it spends nearly all its time feeding and sleeping against its mother. Between about 2 and 4 weeks the first baby teeth come through and most kittens take their first wobbly steps.

When Are Maine Coon Kittens Weaned?

Weaning usually starts at around 4 weeks, when kittens begin lapping at soft, wet kitten food alongside their mother's milk. Most are fully weaned by about 8 weeks, though some still nurse now and then for comfort. These are busy weeks:

  • The litter box. Kittens start using litter at around 3 to 4 weeks, mostly by copying their mother.
  • Play. Running, pouncing and wrestling with littermates build coordination and teach a kitten how hard is too hard to bite.
  • People. Roughly the first two months are when kittens are most open to new experiences, so daily handling, household noise and visitors now shape how they react to people as adults. Maine Coon personality explains why it matters.
  • Baby teeth. The full set of 26 is usually in by about 6 to 8 weeks.
  • First vaccine. The first FVRCP vaccine is usually given at about 6 to 8 weeks.

When Can a Maine Coon Kitten Leave Its Mother?

Not until it is fully weaned, confident and partly vaccinated. Responsible breeders keep kittens with the litter until at least 10 to 12 weeks old, because the extra weeks matter:

  • The kitten is eating solid food well and using the litter box reliably.
  • It has learned manners from its mother and littermates, including gentle play. Kittens taken too early can be more fearful or play rough.
  • It has had its first vaccinations, and the breeder has had time to spot any health problem.
  • It is used to handling, so it settles more easily in a new home.

Kats Kits kittens go home at 10 weeks, after two rounds of the FVRCP vaccine, and a kitten that age typically weighs 2 to 4 pounds. Be wary of anyone selling Maine Coon kittens at 6 or 8 weeks. You can see the kittens ready now on the available kittens page.

When Do Maine Coon Kittens Get Their Adult Teeth?

Between about 3 and 6 months old. The 26 baby teeth fall out and 30 adult teeth replace them, usually starting with the small front teeth at around 3 to 4 months and finishing by about 6 or 7 months.

Teething kittens chew. Give them soft rubber chew toys, keep cords out of reach and expect a little extra nipping; use toys, not hands, in play. Occasionally a baby tooth stays put beside the adult one that has come in, so ask your vet to check the mouth, for example at the spay or neuter visit. This is a good age to start brushing teeth too; see how to care for a Maine Coon.

When Do Maine Coon Kittens Get Fluffy and Grow a Mane?

Slowly. A young Maine Coon kitten has a soft, fairly short kitten coat. The longer, shaggy adult coat comes in gradually through the first year and beyond, and the full adult coat often takes two years or more. Many kittens look fluffy by a few months old, then go through a scruffy, in-between stage as the kitten fluff gives way to adult hair.

  • Mane. The ruff around the neck and chest can show as a fuller frill within the first few months, but a full mane is an adult feature. It usually fills out from the second year on, and males tend to grow the biggest manes.
  • Tail. Long from the start, it gets bushier as the coat grows.
  • Belly and britches. The long fur on the belly and back legs comes in with the adult coat, and so do the knots. See Maine Coon shedding and grooming.
  • Season. The coat, and the mane especially, is usually fullest in winter.

What Is the Maine Coon Teenage Phase?

From around 6 months to a year and a half, many Maine Coons go through a gangly, high-energy stage. The legs seem to grow faster than the body, the cat looks lanky and narrow, and it has a kitten's energy in a body big enough to reach the kitchen counter. Expect:

  • Night zoomies, counter surfing and testing of boundaries.
  • A big appetite. Stay on kitten food until your vet says to switch, often at around a year; see what Maine Coons eat.
  • Hormones. Cats can become sexually mature during this stage, which can bring spraying, calling and a wish to roam. Kats Kits kittens are spayed or neutered before 9 months, and your vet will advise on timing.
  • Plenty of play. Two sessions of 10 to 15 minutes a day with a wand toy burn off energy that would otherwise go into mischief.

Fixes for common teenage habits are in Maine Coon behavior.

When Do Maine Coon Kittens Calm Down?

Gradually, and later than most cats. Many owners find the wildest energy eases somewhere around 2 to 3 years old, as the cat finishes growing and spends more time watching than racing around. Some settle sooner, and plenty keep a playful streak for life, which is part of the breed's charm.

A calm adult is partly made. Regular play, climbing space and a routine of play followed by a meal all help a young Maine Coon settle. If a lively cat suddenly becomes very quiet, though, it is worth a vet check rather than putting it down to maturity.

How Long Is a Maine Coon a Kitten?

It depends on what you measure. By most counts a cat is a kitten until about 1 year old, which is roughly when it moves to adult food. A 1-year-old Maine Coon is close to its adult height, but it is still slim and light for its frame, and it keeps filling out for another two to four years, adding muscle, bone and coat. Most are fully grown somewhere between 3 and 5 years old, and males often take longer than females.

In behavior, many stay kitten-like well past their first birthday. Adult weights, and how to tell whether a grown cat is at a healthy weight, are in how big Maine Coons get.

How Many Toes Do Maine Coon Kittens Have?

Most have 18, like any cat: five on each front foot and four on each back foot. Some Maine Coon lines carry polydactyly, a natural trait that gives a cat extra toes, usually on the front feet. A polydactyl kitten is born with its extra toes, so you can count them from the first day, and they need nothing special beyond an extra claw or two to trim. More on polydactyl Maine Coons.

Quick Answers

Do Maine Coon kittens sleep a lot?

Yes. Young kittens sleep for most of the day, and even a lively older kitten naps between bursts of play. A kitten that is sleepy and also off its food should see a vet.

How often should I weigh my Maine Coon kitten?

Every two to four weeks during the first year, on a kitchen or baby scale. Steady gain matters more than any number, so ask your vet if your kitten stops gaining or loses weight.

Is it normal to find baby teeth around the house?

Yes, if you find any at all. Most baby teeth are swallowed or lost without anyone noticing, and a little pink on a chew toy during teething is normal.

Why does my Maine Coon kitten have such big ears and paws?

It is growing into them. Oversized ears, big paws and a long tail are typical of a young Maine Coon and a sign of the frame still to come.

Do Maine Coon kittens purr?

Yes. Kittens can purr when they are only a few days old, often while nursing, and a purring kitten is usually a contented one.

Is a Maine Coon kitten's personality set at 10 weeks?

Partly. A kitten's confidence with people is shaped in its first couple of months, but its personality keeps developing through the teenage phase and beyond.
