Roy, a 10 week old red classic tabby male Maine Coon kitten from Kats Kits

Roy

Male · 10 weeks · Red classic tabby · $700

Roy is a red classic tabby boy. His coat is a warm orange with the swirled, bullseye markings on his sides that give the classic tabby its name, and his pale cream chest and ruff will fill out into a full mane as he grows. Red Maine Coons are often called orange or ginger, and there is more on the color on the orange and red Maine Coon page.

He has the big paws and tall, tufted ears the breed is known for, and he is all kitten. Roy is active, curious and playful: first to the toy basket, first to investigate a new noise, and much happier chasing a wand toy than sitting still for a photo, which made this one hard work.

A kitten like Roy suits a home with time to play. Two short sessions a day with a wand toy, a tall cat tree to climb and a few puzzle toys will keep him busy and out of mischief, and that energy grows into a confident, sociable adult. Read about Maine Coon personality to see what to expect.

Jean, a 10 week old blue cream tortie polydactyl female Maine Coon kitten from Kats Kits

Jean

Female · 10 weeks · Blue cream tortie · Polydactyl · $700

Jean is a blue cream tortie girl, a soft patchwork of blue-gray and cream with a cream blaze down her nose, cream feet and gold eyes. Blue cream is the dilute form of the tortoiseshell pattern, and like nearly all torties she is female. There is more on both colors on the blue Maine Coon and tortie and calico pages.

She is also polydactyl: she has extra toes, which give her broad, mitten-like front paws. Extra toes run in some Maine Coon lines, and they need nothing special beyond keeping the extra claws trimmed. Read about polydactyl Maine Coons.

Jean is quick, bright and curious about everything going on around her. She joins in any game, warms to new people fast and is already confident enough to go exploring on her own before trotting back to check in. She will suit a lively home that wants a cat who is part of everything.

Claire, a 10 week old brown classic torbie female Maine Coon kitten from Kats Kits

Claire

Female · 10 weeks · Brown classic torbie · $700

Claire is a brown classic torbie, which means she has two patterns at once: the swirled markings of a brown classic tabby and the red and cream patches of a tortoiseshell. Look for the small red patch on her forehead, the warm red on her front paws and the black-tipped tufts on her tall ears. The tortie, torbie and calico page explains how the pattern works.

Claire is soft, calm and sweet. She is happy to be picked up, settles quickly in a lap and would rather curl up beside you than tear around the room.

She will suit a quieter home, a couple or a family with older children, that wants a companion more than an acrobat. A long-haired girl like Claire needs a gentle brush two or three times a week, and a calm kitten usually takes to it easily. See grooming a Maine Coon for how.

Dean, a 10 week old blue classic tabby male Maine Coon kitten from Kats Kits

Dean

Male · 10 weeks · Blue classic tabby · $700

Dean is a blue classic tabby boy. His coat is a soft blue-gray with paler swirls running down his chest, sides and legs, and he has gold eyes and tall, well-tufted ears. Blue is the dilute form of black, which gives the coat its soft, smoky tone. The blue and silver Maine Coon page has more on the color.

He sits tall and square already, with big, broad paws that show how much growing he has left to do. Maine Coons keep filling out until they are three to five years old; see how big Maine Coons get.

Dean is sweet and calm, a steady boy who is happy to be picked up and content to sit beside you rather than race around the room. He takes new people and household noise in his stride, so he will settle well in a family home, including one with children who know to be gentle.

Jesse, a 10 week old solid black male Maine Coon kitten from Kats Kits

Jesse

Male · 10 weeks · Black · $700

Jesse is a solid black boy, black from nose to tail, with golden eyes. His coat will grow longer and glossier over his first year. Black coats can take on a reddish, rusty tint when a cat spends a lot of time in strong sunlight, which is normal and harmless. The black and smoke Maine Coon page has more on the color.

He already has a thick ruff coming in at his chest, tall ears with long tufts at the tips, and the heavy legs and broad paws of a kitten who will grow into a big cat.

Jesse is sweet and calm by nature, a gentle, affectionate boy who likes to be close to his people and will happily curl up on a lap once the play is over. He suits a home that wants a relaxed companion. Like every Maine Coon he will do best on a good, high-protein diet; see what Maine Coons eat.

3. Read the contract

4. Go home at 10 weeks

The balance is paid before go-home day. Then your kitten is collected, met at the airport or brought to you.

Getting Your Kitten Home

Families near the Twin Cities collect their kitten from Farmington or meet Kat at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (MSP), about 30 minutes from the cattery. Kat also delivers in person within about an hour of Farmington.

Further away, a kitten travels with a flight nanny, who carries it in the cabin and hands it to you at your airport, or by ground transport. How kittens travel explains each option and what it involves, and the state pages cover the journey from where you live.

Every Kitten Goes Home With

  • Two rounds of the FVRCP kitten vaccine, already given: it protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia (distemper). The first is given at about 6 to 8 weeks and the second at 9 to 10 weeks
  • A negative FeLV and FIV test
  • A written health guarantee: if your vet finds the kitten unwell within 72 hours, Kat takes it back and treats or replaces it
  • Registration papers, sent once your vet confirms the spay or neuter

The remaining FVRCP booster and the rabies vaccine are due after your kitten comes home, at around 12 to 16 weeks; your vet will schedule them. Kittens go to indoor homes and are not to be declawed without the breeder's approval. The full terms are on the kitten contract page, and the parents' testing is on the health tests page.

Ten weeks. They stay with Kat until then.

Are the kittens registered?

Yes. Registration papers are sent once your vet confirms the kitten has been spayed or neutered. Allow six to eight weeks after that.

What vaccinations will my kitten have had?

Two rounds of the FVRCP kitten vaccine, already given before go-home day: the first at about 6 to 8 weeks and the second at 9 to 10 weeks.
